Galindo vs. Preki - Chivas USA Shooting Contest

A few weeks ago, Chivas USA striker Maykel Galindo and Head Coach Preki stayed after practice to battle in a shooting contest on goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Galindo, Chivas USA's leading scorer in 2007 (though currently out up to eight weeks after sports hernia surgery), went up against Preki, one of the greatest MLS players in the history of the league, and the video below documents the event. Enjoy!

Chivas USA forward Maykel Galindo scheduled to undergo surgery

Chivas USA forward Maykel Galindo is scheduled to undergo sports hernia surgery tomorrow. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Richard Cattey at St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Galindo last played in Chivas USA's 2-1 loss to the New England Revolution on May 11, and has been kept out of the lineup since with pain in his right groin.

A native of Villa Clara, Cuba, Galindo enjoyed a breakout first season in Major League Soccer in 2007, scoring 12 goals and adding five assists in 28 regular season games for Chivas USA, placing himself as the club’s leading scorer.

So far in 2008, Galindo has played in seven games (starting five), scoring one goal and adding two assists in 484 minutes.

Prior to this season, Galindo underwent surgery with Dr. Cattey in January for a sports hernia on his left side.

Chivas USA Training Update

The team worked on a number of different things at training today.

While the field players warmed up and ran through passing drills, the goalkeepers were working with GK Coach Leo Percovich on crosses. Here's a photo of the three goalkeepers rising for a cross - Brad Guzan in the middle, about to catch the ball, with rookie Lance Parker on the left and Dan Kennedy, a recent signing from Deportivo Iquique in Chile, on the right.

Some of the forwards also ran through some finishing drills.

Progresan los ausentes…

Los peligrosos atacantes, el cubano Maykel Galindo (jugó hasta el segundo tiempo ante el Crew) y el estadounidense Ante Razov (ausente ante Salt Lake y Columbus), mostraron progreso y entrenaron al parejo de sus compañeros el jueves. También Claudio Suárez, el defensa mexicano ausente de los primeros tres encuentros debido al fallecimiento de su padre y una lesión en la nariz durante un entrenamiento de la semana pasada, se recupera físicamente y espera hacer su gran debut en la temporada 2008 ante el FC Dallas, el próximo domingo, 20 de abril, en el Home Depot Center de Carson a las 5 p.m. Hora del Pacífico.

“Es algo muy especial para mí, ahora debutar en la liga, ya que no lo pude hacer antes. Mucha gente sabe que falleció mi padre y se prolongó ese debut. Lo más seguro sería (debutar) el domingo, ante el FC Dallas. La verdad que (Dallas) me trae muy buenos recuerdos porque cuando vine aquí a jugar en Chivas USA, fui al Mundial y regresando nos tocó jugar contra Dallas, fue un día para mí muy bueno, metí dos goles, ganamos 3-0", recordó Claudio Suárez durante una teleconferencia el jueves.

El defensor Lawson Vaughn, con una lesión de tendón, también entrenó al parejo de sus compañeros, mientras que el mediocampista suizo Raphael Wicky (dolores de espalda) todavía estuvo haciendo trabajo por separado.

Chivas USA y FC Dallas se enfrentaron en la jornada inaugural de la temporada 2008 y empataron 1-1.
