New cdchivasusa.com column - Red-and-White Monday

A new feature launched today on cdchivasusa.com - it's called "Red-and-White Monday" and it'll be a weekly column that appears on the website, you guessed it, every Monday.

This first one is about what Chivas USA is "on pace" to do this season. Whether it's a goal every 21 minutes from Bojan Stepanovic, or a 500-assist career for Gerson Mayen, the column takes a look at the numbers.

It also includes the Hollywood Corner, where the last match is analyzed with a Los Angeles flair, and the Power Rankings, which put each MLS team in its place.

NEW!!! England national team 2010 Home kit

The English national football team represents England in international football and is controlled by The Football Association, the governing body for football in England. Although most national teams worldwide represent an independent state, the four home nations which form the United Kingdom are each represented separately in international tournaments.England is one of the more successful footballing teams, being one of only seven countries to ever win the FIFA World Cup, which they did in 1966 when they hosted the finals. They defeated West Germany 4-2 in extra time in the Final. England share with France the record of having one World Cup victory and this being achieved on home soil (the other winners have all won the trophy at least twice and at least once on foreign soil). Since then they have only reached the semi-finals once, losing to West Germany on penalties. Nevertheless, they remain a prominent team on the global stage, rarely dropping outside of the top ten rankings of both FIFA and Elo. England also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship in 1968 and 1996 (again played in England). They were the most successful of the Home Nations in the British Home Championship with 54 wins (including 20 shared wins) before the competition was suspended in 1984.Traditionally, England's greatest rivals have been Scotland, who were their opponents in the first-ever international football match in 1870. Since regular fixtures against Scotland came to an end in the late 1980s, other rivalries have become more prominent. Matches with Argentina and Germany have produced particularly eventful encounters. England's home ground is Wembley Stadium in London.

Lillingston nominated for Goal of the Week

For the second straight week, a Chivas USA player has been nominated for Sierra Mist MLS Goal of the Week!

After game one, it was Paulo Nagamura - this time around it's Eduardo Lillingston, who scored his first MLS goal in the 56th minute. It ended up being the game-winner in the Red-and-White's 2-0 victory in Dallas.

Here's video of the strike:

"Gerson [Mayen] started the play, and he played a very good ball into space," said Lillingston after the match. "I played it to the far post and it went in."

Check the post below this one for reactions from the game from Chivas USA players, including Lillingston.

Montreal Impact vs Miami FC pictures and comments...

Miami FC and the Montreal Impact had a scrimmage on Sunday that saw a number of players competing for a place on Miami FC.
Considering Miami FC had only started practicing this past week the team looked good.
One stand out was Miami Fusion veteran Diego Serna who looked sharp and in good form. Word is he is still in talks with Miami FC and we should know this week if he will be part of this years roster.
The game was divided into three 30 minute halves that saw the Impact score 3 times to Miami's 1.
A large number of fans showed up to witness this free event. The next preseason match will take place at Barry University on April 1st, and against Lynn University, April 4th. Other friendlies are still to be confirmed.

Former Fusion player to Miami FC? Diego Serna

Back in the Miami Fusion days there was one player that was the target of all haters in MLS and all across the Bigsoccer boards. His name is Diego Serna and recently we saw him at Copa Latina and the 24-hour Soccer-A-Thon organized by the Ultras. Serna was the epitome of the player everyone loved to hate. He was fast, good at handling the ball and he had a knack at creating dead ball opportunities. Many said he was a diver and I admit he was. His acting skill put any Hollywood actor to shame. Yes, I dare say Miami FC needs a player that will be the face of the team and who better for that then Diego Serna.
If you think Serna would be a great player for Miami FC then lets do something about it and write to Miami FC:
adavidson@trafficsports.com

Here is a little on Diego Serna taken from Wikipedia:
Born October 2, 1973 in Medellín, Colombia. The all-time leading scorer for the now-defunct Miami Fusion of Major League Soccer.

Serna began his career with Deportiva Tulua and Independiente Medellín, before moving to MLS with the expansion Fusion in 1998. He ended up with the team records of 100 games, 52 goals, 36 assists, and 140 points in the regular season, and added a goal and an assist in six playoff games. In 2001, he was named to the MLS Best XI.
Serna played for the NY Metro Stars and later the Revolution. Serna then moved back to Colombia to Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín, before returning to MLS in the middle of the 2003 season for a stint with the Los Angeles Galaxy, scoring three goals in ten games.

After spending some time playing in his native Colombia with Once Caldas and Deportes Quindio, Serna returned to MLS with the Colorado Rapids in August 2005. He was released in November after playing only two matches for the Denver based club. He then played for Macará of Ecuador before joining Club Fast in Brazil on June 14, 2007

Although Serna was an excellent goal-scorer in MLS, after the Miami Fusion was disbanded, he never reached his maximum potential in the league, electing to play in a diverse scope of international opportunities, contributing to his advancement as an established veteran.

Miami FC fans are making a Second Fan Club "The Southern Legion"

The continuation of Miami FC in USL and in Southern Florida has brought on some new excitement to a Soccer town full of fans with lack of interest for Soccer that is not from their own countries.
Most people have heard of the Miami Ultras, Miami FC's official support group. But, out of the shadows of the failed MLS Miami Barcelona bid comes a group of young soccer fans that want to make a difference.

I spoke to Sean Gibb president of the new group who was brought up to love Soccer by his father. Sean is a fan of Deportivo Cali, a Colombian soccer team. Sean try's play Soccer whenever he can with friends.

I asked Sean a few questions:

Uncle Ed: What is the groups name?
Sean Gibb: "The groups name is Southern Legion (Legion del Sur in Spanish)."

UE: How did the idea get started?
SG: A friend, Luis Rodriguez, and I came up with the idea of starting a hardcore fanatics supporters group, like the one's you would see in Colombia. So we created the Facebook page to start getting some members.

UE: What is your target crowd and how many members are in your group so far?
SG: We are trying to target the younger crowd, to bring some energy to the stadium. Anyone is welcome to join, but we are mostly targeting the Hispanics of Miami. We currently have over 90 members in our Facebook group.

UE: Have you had any contact with Miami FC?
SG: We have not had any contact with Miami FC yet since we are only about 1-2 months old.

UE: Have you thought of being part of the Ultras?
SG: We have been in contact with the Ultras and look forward to working with them in the future. But in regards to being part of the Ultras, I don't think that would happen since we are trying to create a different type of group with a different vibe. Plus, maybe a little friendly competition between groups will help bring more people to the stands! hahaha. Although they do have a slight advantage since they have been around for a while.
UE: I want to thank Sean for his time and wish him the best of luck.
If you would like to be part of this group contact the Southern Legion on Facebook
or email: Southern_Legion@hotmail.com

Miami FC to play against USL rival Montreal Impact this Sunday

Only days after announcing they will continue to play in USL; Miami FC is working on getting a competitive team together for the season that begins April 18 vs Cleveland.

No site has been announced yet but it's believed the game will be played at Lockhart Stadium, though the Miami Herald reports there is a schedule conflict that day. To add to Miami FC's dilemma; FIU Stadium is also booked the following day on April 19 for an exhibition with former soccer stars playing for charity. It is also known that FIU is not interested in having Miami FC play at their stadium this year. If you want Miami FC to play at FIU stadium please write to Pete Garcia at: pgarcia@fiu.edu

According to the Montreal Impact site: The Impact will play this Sunday, March 29 at 5 pm against their USL First Division rivals Miami FC at the Sunrise Soccer complex.

I hope to see all South Florida fans out there cheering their team on!
Vamos Miami FC!

NEW!!! Sunderland fc (England) 2009 Home kit

Sunderland Association Football Club are a professional association football club based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, that compete in the Premier League. Since their formation in 1879, they have won six First Division titles—in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913, and 1936 (see Sunderland A.F.C. seasons).
Founded by schoolteacher James Allan, Sunderland moved towards professionalism and they were elected into The Football League in 1890. Sunderland performed well in the league, earning plaudits such as a "wonderfully fine team", and won their first FA Cup in 1937 with a 3–1 victory over Preston North End. However, their achievements petered out, and they were relegated in 1958. They had remained in the top league for 68 successive seasons, a record surpassed only by Arsenal. Sunderland's only triumph after the Second World War was their second FA Cup in 1973, when they secured a 1–0 victory over Leeds United thanks to a goal scored by Ian Porterfield.Sunderland play their home games in the Stadium of Light, an all-seater, having moved from Roker Park in 1997 for a stadium of higher capacity. The ground initially held 42,000 supporters, but that was increased to 49,000 after redevelopment in 2000. Sunderland have a long-standing rivalry with their neighbouring club Newcastle United, with whom they have contested the Tyne–Wear derby since 1898.

Nagamura up for Goal of the Week

Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura - who equaled his goal scoring totals from the '07 and '08 seasons (2) in a five-minute span in the second half of Saturday's win against Colorado - was nominated for the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week for his first goal.

The play occured in the 55th minute of the match, when Nagamura passed to Maykel Galindo, who played a ball up toward forward Justin Braun.

"I screamed to [Justin] to just leave it to me because I had a perfect shot," said 'Paulinho' after the match. "I had a pretty good hit."

Very true - but unfortunately for Paulo, the Goal of the Week nominees this week are an especially strong bunch. Davy Arnaud from Kansas City is on the list for a vicious strike from about 25 yards, and FC Dallas' Kenny Cooper scored from his own half against Chicago, among others.

Check out all the goals and cast your vote by following this link.

Help Bring Miami FC to FIU Stadium!

I'd like to echo the plea made by the Ultras site concerning the new possible stadium for Miami FC.
Miami FC is going to have some games played up in Lockhart Stadium (Broward County) and though I have no objections to this move I do believe the team should play most of the games in the Miami area.

From what we know Miami FC was close to signing a deal to play at FIU’s stadium until the now failed MLS Barcelona Miami bid stepped in and ruined that chance. Now it seems FIU doesn't want Miami FC to play in their stadium...
This move really doesn't make sense as FIU would benefit in many ways, let me explain.
Miami FC is owned by Traffic Sports, organizers of Copa America, Libertadores, among other tournaments. Traffic organizes many sports events in Miami and this means they will need a stadium for these games, which means more money will be going into the University who as it stands will have an empty stadium otherwise.

We need to knock some sense into FIU officials, let them know how we feel. We want Miami FC in FIU Stadium!

Nagamura goals give Chivas USA Opening Day victory / Goles de Nagamura dan la victoria a Chivas USA en el partido inaugural

Two goals in four minutes from Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura gave the Red-and-White a win in their Home Opener, the fourth straight year that Chivas USA has won its first home game of the MLS season.
Nagamura, who had two goals in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons, notched twice in a game for the first time in his MLS career. Both goals were low, right-footed shots to Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens’ right, with the first coming in the 55th minute from 25 yards and the second in the 59th minute from 15 yards.
The Rapids had taken the lead in the 38th minute when Ugo Ihemelu drove a shot which Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton saved, but the rebound fell directly to Omar Cummings, who scored from close range.
Three Chivas USA players made their MLS debuts in the match: Mexican First Division veterans Mariano Trujillo and Eduardo Lillingston both started the match, and the Red-and-White’s first round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, midfielder Michael Lahoud, entered the match as a substitute in the 56th minute.
Claudio Suárez, the player with the most international appearances in Mexican National Team history, addressed the media at halftime of the match alongside club President and CEO Shawn Hunter. Chivas USA announced yesterday that the legendary defender will return to the Red-and-White in 2009. You can listen to audios of the press conference below.

Chivas USA signs Mexican midfielder Mariano Trujillo (and other updates)

Chivas USA announced today the signing of Mexican midfielder Mariano Trujillo, a veteran of the Mexican First Division who has been training with the team for more than a month. Recently, Trujillo has been playing in defense with the Red-and-White, and is awaiting his International Transfer Certificate before he'll be eligible to play in MLS.
Click here for the full press releason on Trujillo joining the team, and here are quotes from the new signing:

On signing with Chivas USA ahead of the 2009 season:

“I’m really happy to join up with Chivas USA for the new season. It’s something I’d been hoping would happen for some time, and, thank God, it’s become a reality. Now I’m hoping that everything goes well this weekend and I can make my debut with the team.”

Had you thought before about giving MLS a try?

“Yes, I’d definitely thought about playing in MLS sooner rather than later, and now the possibility of playing with Chivas USA has become a reality. I’m definitely happy about that, and very excited – it’s a new experience for me.”

How have you adjusted to your new teammates?

“I really like this group of guys, and they’ve welcomed me in. I’d met many of them before, since Chivas USA had given me the chance to train here in the past during vacations from the Mexican season. I already knew most of the group, and so now I’m very happy to be a part of the team, and already comfortable within the squad.”

What are your thoughts on the play in MLS?

“It’s a tough league, and the level keeps improving. In comparison with the Mexican league, I think it’s more difficult to play here in MLS because the physical level is so high, the teams are so well organized, and you have to play much faster.”

In other Chivas USA news:
  • Midfielders Diego Scotti and Erik Hummel have left the preseason camp.
  • Forward Eduardo Lillingston, signed March 9, has received his P-1 work visa and is now (like Trujillo) only awaiting his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) before he is eligible for MLS action.

NEW!!! Blackburn Rovers fc (England) 2009 Home kit

Blackburn Rovers Football Club is an English Premier League football club based in the town of Blackburn, Lancashire. It is one of only three teams to be founder members of both the Football League and the Premier League, the others being Aston Villa and Everton.Blackburn Rovers Football Club was established in 1875, and in 1888 became a founding member of The Football League. In 1890 Rovers moved to its permanent home at Ewood Park. Until the formation of the Premier League in 1992, the majority of the club's success was pre-1930 when they won the league and FA Cup on several occasions. Their relegation in 1966 was followed by 26 successive seasons of football outside the top flight. In 1992, Blackburn were promoted to the new Premier League a year after being taken over by local steel baron Jack Walker, who installed Kenny Dalglish as manager. In 1995, Blackburn became league champions, having spent millions of pounds on players like Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton. However, the title-winning team was quickly split up and, in 1999, the club were relegated. They were promoted back to the Premiership two years later, just after Walker's death, and have been in the top flight ever since. During this time they have qualified for the UEFA Cup four times: once as League Cup winners, twice as the Premiership's sixth-placed team and once via the Intertoto Cup.The club's Latin motto "Arte et labore", which was used by the town council before the club were formed, literally translated means "by art and by labour".
